A little over a month ago we quietly launched our new Summer Academy, a 2 month in-person course where students will design, code and ship their own original iPhone game. In the first month, we received 1,000 applications (400 final, 600 drafts). This year we’ll have 200 spots for the Summer Academy meaning we’re on pace to be as selective as top colleges in our inaugural class.
I see a day when the traditional four-year college degree will be replaced… which is where [MakeGamesWithUs] comes in. - San Jose Mercury News
The Summer Academy is a spinoff of our wildly popular internship program where we had 75 college and high school students building games out of our living room. Between the two years we’ve run the internship, and the courses at MIT and UC Berkeley created off our curriculum over 200 students have taken our in-person courses. And thanks in part to being featured in the Hour of Code, over half a million students have started learning to build iPhone games on our website!
As early as last August we started receiving interest for an in-person program next summer, and it became clear there was huge **demand for a formal in-person course.** Last year we had students move out from Chicago and Mexico City for our summer program, and this year we've already admitted applicants from as far away as India and Australia!
Our past graduates have gone on to do amazing things. Sophie Sheeline and Madelynn Taylor won a fellowship and presented their game ER Rush at the White House!! Yerin Kim and Kate Lee used our curriculum to teach a class at UC Berkeley. Other graduates have gone on to intern at both big tech companies like Square and startups like Flutter (acquired by Google).
My MGWU experience helped me get a job at Square this past summer. Career fair recruiters were impressed when I demoed my game! - Katie Siegel, MIT ’16
We've been very impressed by the quality and diversity of this year's applicants*, from a high school student who's already shipped 28 apps to a technical advisor to the Navy who has a masters degree. They've also built impressive products in the offline world, one founded a company that manufactured and sold wheat crisps, another constructed a fully functioning air conditioner from scratch. We're incredibly excited by the response to the Summer Academy so far and we're looking forward to a terrific inaugural class! *So what are you waiting for? Apply now!
