Make School is committed to the highest standards of student safety and achievement. The two pillars of our student success model are our Income Share financing model and our coaching program.
To ensure alignment between our incentives and your child’s success, in 2014 we pioneered the Income Share Agreement (ISA) as a full tuition financing option. With the ISA, instead of receiving tuition up front we only receive payment when your child is employed. You can read more about our tuition options here. Our alumni are currently employed at Apple, Google, Facebook, Tesla, Yelp, and other top technology companies.
To enable your child to maximize their potential, they will be matched with an individual coach who will meet with them weekly during their entire time studying at Make School. Their coach will advise them on academic and career challenges and opportunities, stay up to date on their progress in class, connect them with outside resources including industry mentors and mental health professionals when appropriate, and are a single point of contact parents can turn to for a comprehensive perspective on their child’s progress at Make School.

“I would like to thank you and your team at Make School for the opportunities that you provided our son… This past year spent with you and your team and the opportunities that your school provided him were extraordinary. He met amazing young students from around the world that helped him to learn and the friendships he made will be lifelong. He further advanced his computer programming & engineering skills and learned about entrepreneurship and the importance of teamwork & collaboration. Even more impressive was the fact that he could find "gainful" employment so quickly and that he is starting to impress his employers right out of the gate. It took a full month at the company for him to be promoted to a more challenging team.
I'm sure that you remember our early conversations in the decision-making process of him leaving UCLA and moving toward your incredibly novel and clever educational model. It was clearly a smart move! We enjoyed seeing our son interviewed online for the school and believe that he will be one of your staunchest supporters and a great ambassador for your program. We expect great things from him. You and Make School will always be a part of his successes. I'm sure that your collaboration with him will be lifelong.”
Bachelor in Applied Computer Science
The Bachelor in Applied Computer Science at Make School is higher education designed for exceptional thinkers and aspiring technologists. Today's educational landscape leaves much to be desired for the intrinsically-motivated student who yearns to apply their skills in a way that can create real change. Make School students are focused on writing software to create impact on industries as diverse as education, healthcare, government, and technology.
We attract students who have ingenuity, drive, and technical expertise and provide an environment that enables them to leverage their talent to build groundbreaking projects including a mind control system for a car and a social good website in partnership with The White House. Students graduate the program with employment offers on par with those offered to graduates of elite programs and our graduates far outperform the average computer science graduate from traditional colleges with starting salaries more than $30k higher than average.
Make School's focus on self-directed and product-based learning is a model that may not be for everyone. Excelling at Make School requires a level of maturity and inherent drive.
We attract students who have ingenuity, drive, and technical expertise and provide an environment that enables them to leverage their talent to build projects like a mind control system for a car or a social good website in partnership with The White House. Make School offers a unique opportunity for students to accelerate their development and build a foundation for an illustrious career in the heart of Silicon Valley. Make School guarantees dorm housing to all students who apply by our early summer deadline. Students primarily live in doubles ($995/mo) and triples ($750/mo) with private bathrooms and in-room mini-fridges. A limited number of singles are available.
Free light breakfast and weekly room cleaning is included in the price of rent. A communal kitchen and coin operated washer/drier are available on site. The dorms are about a 15 minute walk from class and are located near the San Francisco Civic Center - adjacent to the SF Symphony, Opera House, Asian Art Museum, and City Hall. Although there are several areas of San Francisco that are considered to be unsafe, the walk between the dorms and class do not pass through those neighborhoods and is generally considered to be safe.
A Make School education is designed to be engaging, collaborative, and relevant. We believe:
- Learning should be deeply personal and that making is the best way to learn.
- A social education is essential to success in the professional world.
- A good computer science education requires input from tech industry founders, engineers, and CTOs.
With these tenets, we aim to create leaders that view the world with a maker-mentality. The four cornerstones of creating this educational experience are character development, liberal education, computer science theory, and software engineering. Classes that fall into each cornerstone are considered essential to a graduating student's success.
At Make School we recognize that education is responsible for helping students become well-rounded people, citizens, and leaders. Our curriculum is designed to ensure that students gain the skills and development beyond merely the raw technical skills necessary to be a software engineer or a successful entrepreneur.
We teach and assess the soft-skills that are just as valuable as writing an algorithm or debugging a web server. Some of the topics we cover include leadership, communication (written and spoken), emotional intelligence, teamwork, writing, design, personal finance, and economics.
Make School was founded in 2012 with a mission to teach students how to design, program, and launch products. At the core of our pedagogy was and still is project based learning, relevance to industry, and rapid adaptation to student and industry feedback. We've taught over 2,000 students through our in-person courses and over 1.5 million students through online tutorials. Our founders and team have lectured and taught at MIT, Carnegie Mellon, UC Berkeley, Stanford and INSEAD.
In 2014, Make School launched its college program for computer science with a bold and industry-defining financial model: Make School is only paid if students are successfully employed. Placements from the first class of the college program include Snapchat, Pandora, and Google.
In 2015, we introduced our living assistance program which provides students in need with $1500/month for rent and living expenses in return for an extension of their income share.
In 2017, we signed our 50th partner and closed our largest partnership yet - a recruiting partnership with Facebook.
Make School Community
Students that attend Make School are immediately welcomed into a community that includes over 2,000 members who have gone through one of our in-person programs. These students are all available for support, networking, and even user-testing each other's products. Interacting with so many like-minded individuals is one of the assets Make School students appreciate most.
The Make School community is a strong network of individuals that provides support and shared opportunities for success. Students and alumni often continue collaborating with each other even beyond their time at Make School - whether that means winning prizes together at hackathons or hosting reunions and meetups with other alums.
In supporting the Make School community, we consider the physical and emotional safety of our students to be of the utmost priority. Instructors and staff are always available for students to reach out to and confide in. We believe in providing a safe space for students of all backgrounds to come together and learn skills that can help them advance their careers.
After Make School
Make School students graduate with relevant technological skills, an understanding of the product development pipeline as a whole, and a cultivated set of crucial character competencies. The skills learned at Make School prepare students for lifelong career success as developers in the 21st century.
Make School puts a high emphasis on student success both within and after the program. Our incentives are aligned with student achievement and outcomes. On an average, Make School alumni receive salaries comparable to graduates from elite universities and go on to work at top tech companies like Google, Facebook, Yelp, Tesla, and more. We believe our most important goal is to equip our students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in a life-long tech career; with paper credentials being less important. While we don't offer a traditional degree, we provide our students with hands-on experience and robust portfolios that they can show off to future employers. In today's tech marketplace, demonstrable experience is quickly becoming more important than having a degree. To learn more about student outcomes at Make School, visit the Outcomes page.
Corporate Partner Network
Make School is proud to partner with industry-leading companies like Facebook and LinkedIn that are excited about Make School's approach to computer science education. During regular recruiting events hosted at Make School, excited developers and engineers often outnumber our students, and are enthusiastic about bringing their talents on board.
In addition, our partners offer students an inside glimpse at what working at a company looks like - participating in mentorship activities, providing guest speakers, and coordinating Make School field trips to their offices.
The educational and career support offered to Make School students does not end upon graduation. At Make School, we pride ourselves on our ability to offer support to all members of our alumni network long after they have passed through our doors. We care about our students and their budding careers - and we continue to be invested in their success.
We are convinced that by providing our students with the right educational experiences, we will empower them to do amazing things. We can't wait to see what the future holds for our students and for the new world they have the ability to create.
