A letter to our students about their role in shaping tomorrow

The world has just entered a renaissance of technology - the Software Revolution. We're in an unprecedented era of innovation due to 3 driving factors.

First, the open source movement. Open source software has enabled the world to collaborate more efficiently than ever and enabled individuals and businesses to build new products at a fraction of the time and cost. Just as the sharing of ideas led to the explosion of art and culture in the renaissance, the open source movement is driving an explosion of new technology.

Second, availability of economies of scale to small businesses. Platforms like Amazon Web Services deliver efficiencies to networks of individuals and small companies that were previously only available to large corporations. The costs of starting up are lower than ever and individuals and small teams can deliver software to millions of people.

Finally, the ubiquity of smartphones. In a few years, half of the world's population will be walking around with a supercomputer in our pockets. We have access to the world's information at our fingertips and the ability to communicate with people in all corners of the world. Smartphones are augmenting our brains and new types of intelligences are being valued. We're adapting to learn rapidly and excel at creative pursuits instead of rote tasks and memorization. The software on these devices is dramatically changing the way we live and interact with the world.

The Software Revolution is driving much of the first world's economic growth. Software is the backbone for the future economy. Software creates efficiencies and leverage and enables companies to use fewer resources to deliver higher quality products and services. In the next decades, 50% of existing jobs will be replaced by software and automation.


San Francisco is the heart and soul of the Software Revolution. The streets of San Francisco today are akin to the streets of Florence in the 15th century - the epicenter of the world's creativity, ideas and innovation. There's a new land of opportunity where the American Dream is very much alive. The smartest people from all around the world are flocking to San Francisco to join the new gold rush. Here it doesn't matter who you are or where you come from - it matters what you can create.

The streets of San Francisco are buzzing with talk of the next hit app and the hot venture deals. But amidst all the fan fare and media frenzy, some of the world's biggest problems are being tackled and the future is being written - with both positive and negative ramifications. A few fascinating examples of how software is reshaping three critical industries.


Transportation

Apple and Google are building self driving cars. This technology promises fewer accidents, improved traffic conditions, and hours of commute time saved. But there's also a dark side - significant job losses. In most states in America, the most common occupation is truck driver. The country will face a crisis as we hope to re-skill these workers for new careers.

Lyft and Uber are building ride sharing networks. In addition to providing convenient personal transportation, these networks could serve as a replacement for public transportation - especially in a city like San Francisco where subway infrastructure is difficult to construct due to hills. Electric self driving cars can essentially be smaller point to point busses and could prove to be an efficient and cheap solution to San Francisco's public transportation problem.

Zee.Aero is building an electric flying car. While it looks more like a helicopter, it drives, fits in a standard parking spot and takes off and lands vertically.


Food

Momentum Machines is building a burger flipping robot. Fast food will be faster, cheaper and more customizable as drive throughs become akin to vending machines.

Hampton Creek is building fake eggs, and egg related products like mayonnaise and cookie dough. They're beginning to use machine learning and data science to model how plant proteins behave to reproduce the texture and taste of egg based foods. Meat and dairy production are responsible for killing 70 billion land animals every year and are some of the biggest contributors to global warming, California's drought and spread of the flu. Hampton Creek is one of many new vegan food companies aiming to replace animal products with healthier, tastier and more sustainable alternatives.

Soylent is building a meal replacement engineered to provide all the nutrients your body needs. The drink is cheaper, healthier and easier to consume than normal food. In large swaths of America there exist food deserts where people have no access to a supermarket and fresh produce, resulting in a reliance on fast and frozen foods. Transportation and delivery of nutritious food is also a greater challenge than cost when fighting world hunger. Soylent and other meal replacements could prove invaluable to solving both obesity and hunger.


Health

Enlitic is building computer doctors using deep learning and data science. The software will collect a patient's biological data and identify trends to diagnose the patient and suggest treatments.

Second Sight is building bionic eye transplants. Blind people typically have damage to their retina or cornea, but not the part of the brain that processes images. These transplants pipe images from a digital camera directly into the brain to restore sight. Second Sight is part of a new wave of functional prosthetics that promises to extend lives.

Atomwise is building artificial intelligence to create new medicine. The platform can rapidly iterate on potential new formulas and simulate the effects without lab testing. This software has potential to reduce the time of drug discovery by an order of magnitude and dramatically increase the number of diseases we can combat.


In addition to driving innovation, the tech industry is redefining corporations and paving the way for conscious capitalism. Forward thinking companies are flattening corporate hierarchies and giving employees more autonomy, ownership and purpose. Tech companies care about the impact they have on all stakeholders, not simply shareholders. They aim to more closely align income earned and value created in an effort to use capitalism as a sustainable vehicle to do good for the world. Companies are becoming the new religion, uniting their community of employees and customers to stand behind their vision of a brighter future.

As the Software Revolution spreads throughout the world, the culture and values of San Francisco are spreading with it. Every country is desperate to train it's population to think in code and hopes to emulate the innovative spirit of Silicon Valley. San Francisco's thrilling growth is evident through the cranes that rule it's skyline as well as the culture it exports via bits running through the digital infrastructure it created.


Welcome to your new home. With your intellect, drive and passion for technology, you belong here. In the next two years you'll experience everything San Francisco has to offer. You'll absorb the energy of the city, learn from great minds, and discover inspiration and purpose. You have great potential to help write the future - to use your talents and abilities to create and do good for the world.

You are blessed to have these opportunities, when others in the world aren't afforded any. It's your duty to the world to make the most of your potential and use your superpower to help others.
